The artwork was created in the eighth episode of the second season of Work of Art: The Next Great Artist. The artist was tasked with creating a piece of art that could work in both a gallery and street vendor setting.
The artist worked quickly to render her subject’s likeness, creating familiar, yet warped representations. By incorporating watercolor with her drawing technique, she was able to differentiate her portraits with that of the cartoony facsimiles normally populating a park. The pieces all have a peculiar quality that lends themselves to a bigger story that most street portraiture lacks.
Born and raised in Canada with six brothers, Sara Jimenez left home for New York City after completing her BA from the University of Toronto. There, she participated in Parsons’ Summer Intensive Illustration program, and the School of Visual Art’s. She was the co-curator and the director of Salon, an art show. Sara’s art is clearly driven from her exploration and deconstruction of the feminine identity; she works to make a difference, and has received “New Yorkers for Better Neighborhoods” Grant in 2009, and also initiated and developed “Muse: Movement to Uncover Self-Expression”, which was a 6 week non-profit workshop for women in the lower east side.
