\"Van<\/a> OverstockArt.com<\/a>, the online leader of handmade oil paintings, has officially released its annual \u201cTop 20 Best Sellers of the Art and Oil Painting World<\/a>\u201d ranking for 2006.<\/p>\n

According to Amitai Sasson, VP of OverstockArt.com, the company releases its Top 20 list each year as a way of allowing customers to know which works-of-art are the “hippest, most desirable” paintings on the market \u2013 a fact, he says, many people are interested to know.<\/p>\n

\u201cA lot of people want to know what\u2019s selling best because it gives them an idea of what\u2019s trendy, what\u2019s hip, what\u2019s cool and what their respective peer groups are going to enjoy,” he said. \u201cThis is especially true in the business world where offices have to keep up with the latest interior d\u00e9cor in order to maintain a sense of modern quality to impress customers and clients\u2026a lot of business owners like to make sure they\u2019re up to speed.”
\nBy tracking sales statistics, OverstockArt.com is able to compile data allowing them to create the list.<\/p>\n

This year\u2019s top-selling oil painting is Vincent Van Gogh\u2019s \u201cStarry Night\u201d<\/a>, followed closely by another of his masterpieces, \u201cCaf\u00e9 Terrace at Night\u201d<\/a>. In fact, according to Sasson\u2019s statistics, Van Gogh is the top seller for his company both online and offline.<\/p>\n

\u201cNot surprisingly, six of the top twenty Best Sellers came from the gifted and deranged Van Gogh,\u201d he said. \u201cThe Van Gogh sales figures left all of the other artists well behind.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ironically, art history tells us Van Gogh only sold one painting during his lifetime. But Sasson believes the Earless Impressionist has more than made up for his losses.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe may have only sold one painting during his life,\u201d he said. \u201cBut now he is making up for it big time!\u201d<\/p>\n

Gustav Klimt<\/a>, arguably the most praised artist of the year who\u2019s painting \u201cAdelle Bloch Bauer I\u201d<\/a> was sold for a record-breaking $135 million this past June, made it to the top 3 on the list with his oil painting, \u201cThe Kiss\u201d. This oil and gold masterpiece is a touching and passionate work.<\/p>\n

The second most represented artist in the top 20 is Claude Monet<\/a>. Works like \u201cPoppy Field at Argenteuil\u201d<\/a> and \u201cArtist’s Garden at Giverny\u201d<\/a> are still highly popular.<\/p>\n

\u201cMonet was able to capture the essence of impressionism and that seems to be as timeless as afternoon tea,\u201d Sasson said.<\/p>\n

Pablo Picasso<\/a>, who has two paintings in the top 20 with \u201cThe Dream\u201d<\/a> and \u201cGirl before a Mirror\u201d<\/a> came in at the seventh and 12th position respectively. And Salvador Dali<\/a> had one painting in the top 20 with Persistence of Memory<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cDali\u2019s works seem to have lost ground compared to past years since the emergence of other contemporary abstract artists such as Wassily Kandinsky<\/a> and Mark Rothko<\/a>,\u201d Sasson said.<\/p>\n

Rounding out the rest of the list are several post-impressionist paintings such as Cezanne\u2019s “Artist\u2019s Father Reading<\/a>“, Edvard Munch\u2019s \u201cThe Scream\u201d<\/a> and Edgar Degas\u2019s \u201cThe Dance Class\u201d
