{"id":11358,"date":"2018-03-16T10:10:52","date_gmt":"2018-03-16T15:10:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.overstockart.com\/blog\/?p=11358"},"modified":"2018-03-16T10:10:52","modified_gmt":"2018-03-16T15:10:52","slug":"an-unlikely-friendship-gustav-klimt-and-egon-schiele","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.overstockart.com\/blog\/an-unlikely-friendship-gustav-klimt-and-egon-schiele\/","title":{"rendered":"An Unlikely Friendship: Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This year will mark the 100 year anniversary of the death of two of giants of the Vienna Secession movement, Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele.\u00a0 While on the surface these two artists do not appear to have much in common, when looking deeper we can find evidence of their friendship and mutual respect of each other in their art.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-11360\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.overstockart.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/ES6726-1024x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"94\" height=\"94\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.overstockart.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/ES6726-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cdn.overstockart.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/ES6726-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/cdn.overstockart.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/ES6726-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cdn.overstockart.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/ES6726-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/cdn.overstockart.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/ES6726-640x640.jpg 640w, https:\/\/cdn.overstockart.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/ES6726-560x560.jpg 560w, https:\/\/cdn.overstockart.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/ES6726.jpg 1500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 94px) 100vw, 94px\" \/>Egon Schiele had always had a talent for drawing.\u00a0 In 1906, at the age of 16, he was admitted to the Kunstgewerbeschule, or School of Arts and Crafts, in Vienna.\u00a0 This is the same school that Gustav Klimt had also attended from 1876 until 1883. Within a year he was sent to the more traditional Akademie der Bildenden K\u00fcnste.\u00a0 However, he was extremely frustrated with the conservative style taught there and in 1907 Schiele sought out Klimt as a mentor.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-11362\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.overstockart.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Klimt-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"98\" height=\"98\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.overstockart.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Klimt-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/cdn.overstockart.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Klimt-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cdn.overstockart.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Klimt-640x640.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 98px) 100vw, 98px\" \/>\u00a0Gustav Klimt had an established and celebrated career as a traditional artist in Vienna.\u00a0 By 1880, while still in school, he had already had several commissions as part of a team that included his brother and their friend.\u00a0 The group would also assist their teacher in painting murals at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna.\u00a0 In 1888 Klimt would receive an award for his artistic contributions to murals in the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Burgtheater\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Burgtheater<\/a> in Vienna.\u00a0 However, after the death of his father and brother in 1892 Klimt\u2019s style would begin to change.\u00a0 In 1897 he would become one of the founding members of the movement known as the Vienna Secession.<\/p>\n<p>When the young Egon Schiele reached out to Mr. Klimt, the master had already been known to mentor fledgling artists. However, Klimt took a special interest in Schiele and would they often exchange works with one another.\u00a0 Although they began their relationship as a student-mentor it would grow into a friendship that would last until their deaths.<\/p>\n<p>Klimt invited Schiele to exhibit his works in the 1909 Vienna <em>Kunstschau<\/em>.\u00a0 When studying Schiele\u2019s works from this early period one can definitely see the impact that Klimt had on the artist.\u00a0 The two would even use the same models.\u00a0 A particularly striking comparison would be the portrait of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.overstockart.com\/painting\/schiele-frederike-beer-1914&amp;option_id=10130&amp;bc=791_1197\">Friederike Maria Beer-Monti<\/a>.\u00a0 Egon Schiele painted her portrait in 1914 and shows her from behind, looking over her shoulder.\u00a0 She is standing on her toes, with her knees bent and hands over her head.\u00a0 Her dress is heavily pattered and colorful, but the background is empty.\u00a0 In 1916 Gustav Klimt painted her portrait.\u00a0 In his portrait she is standing facing forward.\u00a0 She is wearing a jacket over her dress, and both are heavily pattered and colorful.\u00a0 The background in Klimt\u2019s portrait is full of Japanese and Asian inspired imagery.\u00a0 Interestingly, despite their differences in depicting the human form, Klimt\u2019s is softer and more ethereal, while Schiele\u2019s is more jagged and grotesque, her hands seem to be holding the same pose.\u00a0 The hand on the viewer\u2019s right is making a circle with her fingers, and the hand on the viewer\u2019s left is left semi-open making a sort of \u201cC\u201d shape.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_11364\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11364\" class=\"wp-image-11364 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.overstockart.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Friederike-Maria-Beer-Monti.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.overstockart.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Friederike-Maria-Beer-Monti.jpg 640w, https:\/\/cdn.overstockart.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Friederike-Maria-Beer-Monti-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cdn.overstockart.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Friederike-Maria-Beer-Monti-560x420.jpg 560w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-11364\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Left: Fredericke Maria Beer by Gustav Klimt, 1916 Right: Portrait of Friederike Maria Beer by Egon Schiele, 1914<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Other similarities that the two artists share are the elongated bodies in their works.\u00a0 While Schiele\u2019s depictions are often twisted and contorted, Klimt painted them with a more flowing aesthetic.\u00a0 Another theme the two would share is death and rebirth. \u00a0The two often were known for pushing the conventional boundaries of what would be considered acceptable subject matter.\u00a0 When Klimt began to unveil his murals for the ceiling of The Great Hall of The University of Vienna, his patrons were clearly unaware of his new direction.\u00a0 The public was outraged at the images of nude writhing women.\u00a0 The works were called pornographic and a public prosecutor was even called in over the removal of the work.\u00a0 Egon Schiele was also notorious for his choice of subject matter.\u00a0 Schiele also would paint women in various stages of undress and nudity.\u00a0 However, it was his choice in models that would elicit a strong public reaction.\u00a0 Schiele often would have young, teenage girls as his models.\u00a0 In 1912 he would be arrested and spend time in jail for his association with young girls in his studio.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_11368\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11368\" class=\"wp-image-11368 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.overstockart.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Comparison-1024x559.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"559\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.overstockart.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Comparison-1024x559.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cdn.overstockart.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Comparison-300x164.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cdn.overstockart.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Comparison-768x419.jpg 768w, https:\/\/cdn.overstockart.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Comparison-560x305.jpg 560w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-11368\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Left: Liegende Frau mit roter Hose und Stehender Weiblicher Akt by Egon Schiele, 1917 Right: The Virgin by Gustav Klimt, 1913<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Throughout their friendship they both had their share of criticism and success.\u00a0 After his arrest Schiele would go on to marry Edith Harms and find maturity in his artistic style.
