{"id":11509,"date":"2018-03-26T10:07:08","date_gmt":"2018-03-26T15:07:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.overstockart.com\/blog\/?p=11509"},"modified":"2018-03-26T10:07:08","modified_gmt":"2018-03-26T15:07:08","slug":"vincents-view-vue-de-lasile-et-de-la-chapelle-de-saint-remy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.overstockart.com\/blog\/vincents-view-vue-de-lasile-et-de-la-chapelle-de-saint-remy\/","title":{"rendered":"Vincent\u2019s View: Vue de l&#8217;asile et de la Chapelle de Saint-R\u00e9my"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It is widely known that during his final years Vincent van Gogh spent time in the Saint-Paul Asylum in Saint-R\u00e9my, France.\u00a0 He had admitted himself due to the crippling depression he suffered from throughout his life.\u00a0 It was during this time that he would paint some of his most iconic pieces, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.overstockart.com\/painting\/van-gogh-starry-night&amp;option_id=3693\"><em>Starry Night<\/em><\/a> (1889)<em>. <\/em><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_11546\" style=\"width: 449px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11546\" class=\"wp-image-11546\" title=\"Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam (Vincent van Gogh Foundation)\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.overstockart.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/vangoghmuseum-d0176V1962-3840-786x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"439\" height=\"563\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-11546\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Vestibule in the Asylum<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Van Gogh entered Saint-Paul Asylum in May of 1889 and was released in May of 1890. Saint Paul was originally built in the 12<sup>th<\/sup> century as monastery, but was converted to an asylum in the 19<sup>th<\/sup> century.\u00a0 It was surrounded by olive trees, wheat fields and vineyards.\u00a0 Van Gogh would be given two rooms during his stay at Saint Paul\u2019s.\u00a0 One would be his bedroom and the other would be used as a studio. He would paint scenes of the surrounding grounds during his time at the asylum.\u00a0 Cypresses and olive trees became a subject of interest.\u00a0 He would often paint them on the short walks he was allowed around the grounds of the asylum.\u00a0 During his year there Van Gogh would complete almost 150 works including: \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.overstockart.com\/painting\/van-gogh-olive-trees-with-the-alpilles-in-the-background&amp;option_id=3355\"><em>Olive Trees with the Alpilles in the Background<\/em><\/a> (1889), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.overstockart.com\/painting\/van-gogh-two-cypresses&amp;option_id=5815\"><em>Cypresses<\/em> <\/a>(1889), and <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.overstockart.com\/painting\/wheat-field-with-cypresses-custom\">Wheat Field with Cypresses <\/a><\/em>(1889). While he painted several scenes from the grounds and the interior of the asylum, there was only one that he painted of Saint-Paul\u2019s exterior.\u00a0 <em>Vue de l&#8217;asile et de la Chapelle de Saint-R\u00e9my<\/em>, or <em>View of the Asylum and Chapel of Saint-R\u00e9my <\/em>was painted in the Fall of 1889, less than a year before his death in July of 1890. As with many of his paintings during this time Van Gogh would send the painting to his brother, Theo.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_11526\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11526\" class=\"wp-image-11526 size-full\" title=\"Christie's, LotFinder: entry 5532359\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.overstockart.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/1024px-Vincent_Van_Gogh_-_Vue_de_lasile_et_de_la_Chapelle_de_Saint-R\u00e9my.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"752\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-11526\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Vincent van Gogh &#8211; Vue de l&#8217;asile et de la Chapelle de Saint-R\u00e9my<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Theodorus &#8220;Theo&#8221; van Gogh was Vincent\u2019s younger brother, and an established art dealer during his lifetime. In addition to the impact he made on Vincent\u2019s art career, Theo was also influential in growing the interest in the Impressionism movement.\u00a0 It was Theo who convinced his employers, Goupil &amp; Cie, to purchase and promote artists such as Claude Monet and Edgar Degas. After Vincent\u2019s death Theo would inherit all of Vincent\u2019s estate, including all remaining artworks. Over the next few months Theo\u2019s health would rapidly deteriorate.\u00a0 He would die six months after his older brother in January 1891.<\/p>\n<p>After Theo\u2019s death his widow, Johanna van Gogh-Bonger, would continue to promote Vincent\u2019s works.\u00a0 In 1905 Johanna and her new husband, Johan Cohen Gosschalk, organized a large exhibition of Van Gogh\u2019s works at the Stedelijk Museum.\u00a0 It was in this exhibition that art collector Paul Cassirer would first see <em>Vue de l&#8217;asile et de la Chapelle de Saint-R\u00e9my. <\/em>Cassirer bought the painting in 1907 and added it to a travelling exhibit.<\/p>\n<p>In 1963 American art dealer, Francis Taylor, would purchase the piece on behalf his daughter, actress Elizabeth Taylor.\u00a0 Ms. Taylor had an extensive art collection that included works by Degas, Matisse, and Pissarro.\u00a0 From its acquisition in 1963 until her death in 2011 Van Gogh\u2019s <em>Vue de l&#8217;asile et de la Chapelle de Saint-R\u00e9my<\/em> would hang in the living room of Ms. Taylor\u2019s Bel Air home.\u00a0 After her death, Taylor\u2019s art collection would be auctioned by the famous auction house Christie\u2019s.\u00a0 In 2012 the piece would sell for almost $16 million to an anonymous bidder.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_11522\" style=\"width: 644px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11522\" class=\"wp-image-11522 size-full\" title=\"Image by Pascal J Le Segretain.
