{"id":11916,"date":"2018-05-18T15:32:35","date_gmt":"2018-05-18T20:32:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.overstockart.com\/blog\/?p=11916"},"modified":"2018-05-18T15:32:35","modified_gmt":"2018-05-18T20:32:35","slug":"the-muses-women-who-inspired-great-art","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.overstockart.com\/blog\/the-muses-women-who-inspired-great-art\/","title":{"rendered":"The Muses: Women who Inspired Great Art"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When looking at the striking artwork from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries we often see the same beautiful women throughout various pieces, and although these faces may become as familiar as the artist himself we often have little knowledge of the person behind the portrait.\u00a0 Who are these stunning women that captured the imagination and inspired the great artists who painted them?<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-11947 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.overstockart.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Emilie-Floge.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"202\" height=\"50\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-11917\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.overstockart.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Portrait-of-Emilie-Fl\u00f6ge-1902-300x240.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"560\" height=\"448\" \/>Emilie Fl\u00f6ge (1874-1952) was the companion and muse of Gustav Klimt.\u00a0 The two met when Emilie was 18 years old and Klimt was around 30 years old.\u00a0 Although they never married or had children, their relationship would last for 26 years, until Klimt\u2019s death in 1918.\u00a0 Emilie and her sister ran a couture fashion salon in Vienna where they would design dresses that were known as Reform Dresses at the time.\u00a0 These loose fitting dresses could be worn without a corset and were heavily patterned.\u00a0 Emilie, herself, appears in Klimt\u2019s works <em>Portrait of Emilie Fl\u00f6ge <\/em>(1893), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.overstockart.com\/painting\/klimt-portrait-of-emilie-floge-luxury-line&amp;option_id=9037\"><em>Portrait of Emilie Fl\u00f6ge <\/em><\/a>(1902), and some historians believe that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.overstockart.com\/painting\/the-kiss-(full-view-luxury-line)&amp;option_id=5594\"><em>The Kiss <\/em><\/a>(1908) is a portrait of Klimt and Fl\u00f6ge.\u00a0 Despite the rare appearance of Emilie in his paintings, her fashion designs can be seen throughout his works. In 1885 Aline gave birth to their first son, Pierre.\u00a0 They would marry in 1890 and go on to have two more sons.\u00a0 Aline can be seen in numerous pieces by Renoir including: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.overstockart.com\/painting\/renoir-luncheon-of-the-boating-party-1731282128-106782138&amp;option_id=5619\"><em>Luncheon of the Boating Party <\/em><\/a><em>(1881), Boating Couple (1881), Blonde Bather (1881), <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.overstockart.com\/painting\/renoir-dance-in-the-country&amp;option_id=5507\"><em>Dance in the Country <\/em><\/a>(1883), <em>In the Garden <\/em>(1885), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.overstockart.com\/painting\/renoir-the-artists-family-1896&amp;option_id=7127\"><em>The Artist&#8217;s Family <\/em><\/a><em>(1896),\u00a0<\/em>\u00a0 and several others.\u00a0 After the birth of their son, Claude, in 1901 Aline developed diabetes, a disease she hid from her husband.\u00a0 She passed away in 1915, preceding her husband by four years.\u00a0 Renoir\u2019s other muse was Aline\u2019s cousin and the family\u2019s nanny, Gabrielle Renard.\u00a0 Gabrielle bonded with the couple\u2019s second son, Jean.\u00a0 That bond would last throughout their lives.\u00a0 Gabrielle can be seen in Renoir\u2019s works\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.overstockart.com\/painting\/renoir-gabrielle-and-jean&amp;option_id=7164\"><em>Gabrielle and Jean <\/em><\/a><em>(1896), <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.overstockart.com\/painting\/renoir-the-artists-family-1896&amp;option_id=7127\"><em>The Artist&#8217;s Family <\/em><\/a><em>(1896), and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.overstockart.com\/painting\/renoir-gabrielle-with-a-rose-1911&amp;option_id=6342\">Gabrielle with a Rose <\/a>(1911), <\/em>among many others<em>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>To (1847-1879) began to model while in her teens.\u00a0 It was during this time,\u00a0in 1865, that she met Claude Monet and became his mistress shortly after.\u00a0 In 1867, two years after they first met, Camille would give birth to the couple\u2019s first son, Jean.\u00a0 Monet\u2019s father, who supported him financially, did not approve of the relationship between Camille and Claude, and so during her pregnancy Monet left her in Paris to return to the family estate and protect his monthly stipend.\u00a0 In 1868 Monet would reunite with Camille and their son in Paris, although Monet would continue to hide the relationship from his father.\u00a0 The couple married in 1870.\u00a0 Camille modeled for her husband on many occasions and she was one of his favorite subjects.\u00a0 She can be found in <em>Camille or The Woman in a Green Dress <\/em>(1866), \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.overstockart.com\/painting\/poppy-field-in-argenteuil&amp;option_id=5671\"><em>Poppy Field in Argenteuil <\/em><\/a><em>(1871), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.overstockart.com\/painting\/the-promenade-near-argenteuil&amp;option_id=5847\">The Promenade Near Argenteuil<\/a> (1873), <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.overstockart.com\/painting\/monet-madame-monet-and-her-son-932268092&amp;option_id=2722\"><em>Madame Monet and her Son <\/em><\/a>(1875), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.overstockart.com\/painting\/monet-bouquet-of-gadiolas-lilies-and-dasies-1629636641&amp;option_id=6041\"><em>Camille Monet and a Child in the Artist&#8217;s Garden in partners.\u00a0 They each had their own story, which is often overlooked.\u00a0 Next time you are admiring a great piece of art, don\u2019t forget to ask yourself \u201cwho is this person?\u201d She may be a daring fashion designer and businesswoman in her own right, or a young dressmaker immersed in the art scene, or a model that was abandoned, penniless and pregnant, but still managed to
