Cubism is an avante-garde art movement started in the early 20th<\/sup> century that directly influenced many European painters and sculptors. It also inspired similar movements in music and literature. It is often applied widely to art created during the 1910s and 1920s, where the artist attempts to draw attention to the use and manipulation of perspective. Most notable, the ability to create the allusion of a third dimension.<\/p>\n

This evocative art movement held some of the most notable modern painters in history. They included Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque and Jean Metzinger, among others. Most art historians consider Paul Cezanne to be one of the original inspirations, although his work does not follow all of the movement\u2019s most recognizable techniques. They drew from Cezanne\u2019s use of the underlying architecture in a subject and expanded on it. They broke the subject into parts that could be represented in multiple dimensions, on multiple planes. The use of geometric shapes to build the image became one of the trademarks of this movement.<\/p>\n

As you browse through our Cubism gallery<\/a>, you will notice that we have a variety of different artist to fit any style. Juan Gris<\/a> is a Spanish artist who is influenced by his early work as a cartoonist.\u00a0 He uses color to enhance the subject, as in The Smoker<\/a><\/em> and Harlequin<\/a><\/em>. Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso<\/a> studied artists such as Modigliani and Max Jacob before finding his own unique style. Many of his pieces feature architecture such as A Clear House<\/a><\/em> and Brook House<\/a><\/em>. Modern artist Nora Shepley<\/a> has a style very similar to Picasso, but with much more bold and vivid colors. Pieces like Picasso Four Eyes<\/em><\/a> and Picasso Indian<\/a><\/em> are easily identified and admired for their homage to one of the fathers of the movement.<\/p>\n
