The Whitney Museum of Art has announced that they will deaccession seven works of art and put them up for auction at Sotheby\u2019s in New York. These will include an Edward Hopper and other artists. It has been five years since the museum deaccessed any of their collection and the decision was made after a careful review. The proceeds from the auction will be put towards future acquisitions, to keep the collection fresh and attracting new audiences.<\/p>\n
Hopper\u2019s Cobb\u2019s Barns, South Truro<\/em> and three of his watercolors, were deemed duplicative within the collection, thus making them eligible for deaccession. Deaccession is the process where a museum\u2019s curator decides what items to remove from a collection and usually sold. Some of the criteria they use to make that determination include the physical condition of the work, the uniqueness of the piece compared to the rest of the collection, and if it is consistent with the overall goal of the museum.<\/p>\n Hopper is particularly well represented by the Whitney and Cobb\u2019s Barns, South Truro <\/em>is most famous for hanging in the White House during President Obama\u2019s terms.
