Caspar David Friedrich was a German painter in the early 1800 who was part of the Romantic Movement and would be celebrating his birth day on September 5th<\/sup>. He was born near the Baltic Sea and never left that part of Europe. At a young age he lost many family members, which might have contributed to his melancholy view of the world. He studied art formally from a young age up through University and the school he attended is now named after him.<\/p>\n

Friedrich was most well-known for his dramatic landscapes, often depicting solitary figures against a grand backdrop. He believed that a landscape could create a romantic feeling with the audience. The viewer is supposed to imagine themselves as the sole person in the painting, taking in the view as they would. At the beginning of his career Friedrich enjoyed being very esteemed and acclaim, but later when the romanticism period began to fade so did his popularity. People often remarked that the paintings has a loneliness about them that is often attributed to the feelings of the artist himself.<\/p>\n

Friedrich\u2019s art enjoyed a revival around the turn of the 20th<\/sup> century, when his art began to inspire a number of surrealist artists. Today he is a national icon in Germany, where he was born, and is considered an important figure in art history.
