The Impressionist and modern art world had a very special week. Van Gogh<\/a>, Monet<\/a>, Picasso<\/a>, Renoir, and other of the old masters took headlines again in the Sotheby’s and Christie’s Auction.<\/p>\n

The following is a short summary of this week shinning stars according to the New York Times<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

“L’Arl\u00e9sienne, Madame Ginoux,” an 1890 van Gogh portrait of the proprietress of the Caf\u00e9 de la Gare in Arles, France, which the artist frequented until his suicide in 1890.<\/p>\n

\n

Sold for $40.3 million. This was a \u201cbargain\u201d considering Van Gogh\u2019s last portrait sold “Dr. Gachet” brought $82.5 million in 1990.<\/p>\n

“Repose,” a startling, almost demonic 1932 depiction of Picasso’s mistress Marie-Th\u00e9r\u00e8se Walter. On Jan. 22, 1932, two days before Picasso painted “‘The Dream,<\/a>” a more famous portrait of Walter asleep in an armchair.<\/p>\n

$95.2 million. Becomes the second-highest price ever paid for a work of art at auction, after “Boy With a Pipe (The Young Apprentice),” a 1905 painting from Picasso’s Rose Period, which brought $104.1 million at Sotheby’s in May 2004.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n
