{"id":74,"date":"2006-08-01T17:13:27","date_gmt":"2006-08-01T17:13:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.artcorner.com\/oh-for-an-o%e2%80%99keeffe\/"},"modified":"2006-08-01T17:13:27","modified_gmt":"2006-08-01T17:13:27","slug":"oh-for-an-okeeffe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.overstockart.com\/blog\/oh-for-an-okeeffe\/","title":{"rendered":"Oh for an OKeeffe"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>American born <a title=\"Georgia O'Keeffe\" href=\"https:\/\/www.overstockart.com\/georgiaokeeffe.html\">Georgia O&#8217;Keeffe<\/a> was a painter whose fame was in the<br \/>\npurity of such noted still life&#8217;s as White Flower on Red, Red Cannas, Red<br \/>\nCanna, and Two Pears.<\/p>\n<p>Born in Sun Prairie Wisconsin, Georgia O\u2019Keeffe attended both the Art<br \/>\nInstitute of Chicago and New York City\u2019s Art Students League. Alfred<br \/>\nStieglitz, later to become her husband, displayed her paintings in his New<br \/>\nYork City gallery in 1916. Gorgeous O\u2019Keefe works were displayed there<br \/>\nuntil Stieglitz\u2019s death in 1946.<\/p>\n<p>In 1949 her move to New Mexico influenced Georgia O\u2019Keeffe to produce<br \/>\nsome of her best-known works \u2013 larger than life still lifes of desert<br \/>\nscenery and flowers. Her subjects are realistic although painted in a<br \/>\nstark linear fashion, with clear and thin colors and bold abstract<br \/>\npatterns<\/p>\n<p>Many Georgia O\u2019Keeffe still life works have the contrast of realism<br \/>\nwith some abstract effects. One, in particular, is her 1926 rendition of<br \/>\nBlack Iris, which hands in New York City\u2019s Metropolitan Museum of Art. She<br \/>\ntook a very realistic look at the black iris but enlarged it so<br \/>\nmassively that its details actually become surprising, seeming to be<br \/>\nunfamiliar.<\/p>\n<p>In the 1960\u2019s Georgia O\u2019Keefe became entranced with airplanes as her<br \/>\nmode of transportation. O\u2019Keefe paintings with clouds and sky began to<br \/>\nemerge on a regular basis. One of her largest works is the 1965 Sky Above<br \/>\nClouds, which has a massive width of 24 feet.<\/p>\n<p>O\u2019Keefe paintings, reproductions of which are available online, are<br \/>\ndisplayed all over the United States, both in public and private museums<br \/>\nas well as private home collections.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>American born Georgia O&#8217;Keeffe was a painter whose fame was in the purity of such noted still life&#8217;s as White Flower on Red, Red Cannas, Red Canna, and Two Pears.
