The two artists share more than a first name. Currently, Paul C\u00e9zanne<\/a>\u00a0and Paul Gauguin<\/a> hold the record for the top two most expensive paintings in the world.\u00a0Paul Gauguin’s 1892 “Nafea Faa Ipoipo (When Will You Marry?)<\/a>” sold for $300 million in 2015<\/a>, and Paul C\u00e9zanne’s “The Card Players”<\/a>\u00a0for an undisclosed $250 million\u2013$300 million in 2011<\/a>.\u00a0Mentor, friend, and rival\u2014the relationship between Paul C\u00e9zanne\u00a0and Paul Gauguin was quite complicated during the course of their lifetimes.<\/p>\n

Paul Gauguin\u2019s 1892 \u201cNafea Faa Ipoipo (When Will You Marry?)\u201d and Paul C\u00e9zanne\u2019s 1890-92 \u201cThe Card Players.\u201d<\/p><\/div>\n

Camille Pissarro<\/a> introduced\u00a0the two Pauls in the 1870s, who became fast friends. Gauguin even became an early collector of\u00a0C\u00e9zanne’s, with his acquisition of\u00a0the still life \u201cCompotier, verre et pomme (Fruit Bowl, Glass, and Apples),\u201d which he described in 1888 as \u201can exceptional marvel.\u201d Gauguin also included himself in a\u00a0work\u00a0from 1890 titled \u201cPortrait de femme \u00e0 la nature morte de C\u00e9zanne.\u201d Gauguin\u00a0was quite influenced by the the talent and prominence of\u00a0C\u00e9zanne. The two Pauls were at the heart of Post-Impressionism:\u00a0Gauguin and C\u00e9zanne painted\u00a0lighter and swifter\u00a0tones with a smoother gradation compared to the thick singular hues of Impressionism<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Gauguin saluted C\u00e9zanne respectfully by referencing his friend and colleague\u00a0in\u00a0some of his paintings. Gauguin rendered a seated woman with one hand at her side and the other in her lap within his piece\u00a0“Portrait of a Woman In Front of a Still Life,” with a still life by C\u00e9zanne in the background. Art historians examined\u00a0the painting in X-rays and noted\u00a0changes Gauguin made as he was painting. In previous\u00a0stages, the woman had her hands folded in her lap,\u00a0as\u00a0female models did in many portraits by C\u00e9zanne (but especially his wife). Painters of the period noted Gauguin’s respect for his colleague as well as each other. In 1900, Maurice Denis painted “Homage to C\u00e9zanne,”\u00a0featuring a group of artist\u2019s surrounding an easel holding a painting by C\u00e9zanne, owned by Gauguin.\u00a0In the background was a work rendered by Gauguin, who may have been\u00a0C\u00e9zanne’s biggest fan at the time.<\/p>\n

While it is unclear if the growing distance in their relationship was due to personal reasons, professional rivalry seems to have greatly contributed to the encroaching\u00a0divide. In an analysis<\/a> of\u00a0Gauguin’s ‘Portrait of a Woman in Front of a Still Life’, the Art Institute of Chicago recalls: “Gauguin was also one of the first to turn to a wide variety of non-Western sources for inspiration in his effort to imbue painting with renewed mystery and to forge alternatives to naturalism. Some of the flatness and linear emphasis in this portrait reflects Gauguin\u2019s interest in Japanese prints. Ironically, it is because of this quality that C\u00e9zanne once disparagingly referred to Gauguin\u2019s works as ‘Chinese images.'”<\/p>\n

Donatien Grau\u00a0notes<\/a>\u00a0something interesting about the distance between Gauguin and C\u00e9zanne\u00a0at The Brooklyn Rail<\/em>: “…while the latter is very critical towards the former\u00a0[…], Gauguin, who talks at length about Van Gogh in his memoirs, Avant et Apr\u00e8s, never even mentions C\u00e9zanne.” Though the two Pauls are long dead, their artworks continue to wage war.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
