As the days grow shorter and temperatures drop, artwork like Lane Farnham’s can really brighten up a room. A Los Angeles resident for over 15 years now, his sparkling photographs often portray the vibrant warmth of the California coast. Living as close to the beach as he does, it affords him many an opportunity to appreciate the daily variety of shifting light and weather patterns. His images show sunsets burning behind the clouds, glistening waves crashing on rocky coasts, and wooden piers silhouetted against the evening sky.<\/p>\n

Farnham says that much of his inspiration to become an artist arose from his parents, who traveled internationally before he was born. His father was both a pilot and a photographer, who documented their travels with a Nikon he purchased in Japan. Beginning in high school, Farnham began taking photos of his own, working for the local newspaper to document his school’s sporting events. Even then he would enter photography competitions at the California Mid-State Fair and won several youth-oriented contests.<\/p>\n

Since then, he has graduated from the Brooks Institute of Photography with a B.A. in Film and works as an editor for feature films and television series’. It wasn’t until 2004, after about a decade-long break, that he finally decided to pick up his still camera again. We’re glad he did.<\/p>\n

Though you may see the occasional 35mm film shot in his gallery, most of his work is made with a Canon DSLR and a small selection of prime lenses. Keeping a relatively light emphasis on gear lets him worry less about what to use and pay more attention to the atmospheric conditions around him. More than the equipment, Farnham says that clouds and sun quality are the most important. Lately, his love of low light photography has grown in particular. Preparing and setting up for long exposures can only go so far and there’s a certain relinquishing of control that necessarily goes along with this style. The light you expect to capture will come, but there’s always a chance that you’ll capture something else as well, which could be a pleasant (or unpleasant) surprise.<\/p>\n

It’s thanks to his wife – a jewelry designer and contemporary artist in her own right – that Lane Farnham’s gallery on ArtistBe.com<\/a> exists at all. They both like to share inspiration with each other that they get from other artists and it’s through that process that she discovered the site. Her encouragement to participate has given him a worldwide audience for his creative efforts, resulting in far more people seeing his work than ever would have at local shows.<\/p>\n
