Born in the city formerly known as Stalingrad (now Volgograd), Elena Kourenkova is a self-taught multidisciplinary artist. She originally studied architecture and practiced it for some years in Moscow, before moving to Glasgow in the 1990's. She gets inspiration for her art from her own personal experiences and observations, making the people and situations depicted feel familiar and authentic. Much of her work is humorous and lighthearted without venturing into parody. She enjoys dancing (mostly rockabilly, jive, and swing) and its influence shows in her work.
She describes growing up under Soviet rule and yearning for an escape through liberated self-expression. This is what she has found in her art. She always seeks to convey the lighter, funnier, and happier aspects of everyday life which has made her work incredibly popular in all countries. Her work hangs in public, private, and corporate collections throughout the world including the United Kingdom, Russia, Australia, and Sweden.
