Alice Bailly Paintings

Born in Geneva, Switzerland in the late 19th century, groundbreaking artist Alice Bailly moved to Paris in 1906. Despite initially landing there to show some wood engravings, inspiration quickly took her in other directions. She made fast friends with numerous avant-garde painters, including Francis Picabia and Juan Gris, and was drawn to the exploding artistic movement of Fauvism. Its vibrant hues, stark contrasts, and exaggerated proportions made their way into her work and it wasn't long before her paintings were hanging alongside established greats.

Alice Bailly's style, while inspired by Fauvism, never fit so neatly into one particular label. As she traveled and learned, she incorporated elements of Cubism, Dada, and even invented a signature style of mixed media art which used strands of wool to mimic brush strokes. Always exploring, Alice Bailly's eye-catching artwork has stood the test of time and cemented her place as a leader among not just female artists, but early 20th century artists as a whole.
