Happy Birthday Vincent: Upcoming Biopic is Entirely Hand-Painted

Oscar-winning production companies Breakthru Films and Trademark Films are breaking new ground with their upcoming feature entitled Loving Vincent. The hard work of sixty painters over several years will finally release this year and while there’s no exact date just yet, I’m already excited.

As the world’s first feature length animation to be painted by hand, the amount of work it’s taken is staggering. In order to produce what’s going to be an 80-minute long film, these dedicated artists have created 56,800 individual oil paintings. The director herself, Dorota Kobiela, is a classically trained painter in addition to an award winning animator.

The story is taken directly from the more than 800 letters written by the artist in his lifetime. Those who are familiar with Van Gogh know that such an intense and dramatic life needs no sensationalizing. For those readers who aren’t familiar with the artist’s life, all of his letters are available for free online, in a wonderfully searchable and annotated form.
