Known for his use of color in his paintings, Henri Matisse was also a printmaker and sculptor. Born in the north of France, he is considered a traditional French painter with his use of brilliant brushstrokes. His love of painting began when he contracted appendicitis and was on bed rest. After studying in St. Tropez, he joined a group called the “Fauves” who used color in a very non-traditional way. In 1904 he met and became friends with renowned artist, Pablo Picasso, who also became one of his rivals. Although similar, the two artists had one major difference – Picasso painted from imagination, while Matisse drew inspiration from still life.
