Thomas Cole

Landscape painter Thomas Cole (February 1, 1801-February 11, 1848) was an English-born American artist and the founder of the Hudson River School, a mid-19th century art movement whose aesthetic was heavily influenced by romanticism. Cole worked primarily in the Hudson River Valley and the surrounding areas, including the Catskill and Adirondack mountain regions as well as throughout New England and the American West. Although he was born in Lancashire in Northwestern England, Cole emigrated to the U.S. in 1818 and quickly situated himself as one of the most significant American artists of his time. In the Hudson River School, Cole was joined by prominent artists John Frederick Kensett, Frederic Edwin Church, Asher Brown Durand and others.

Although the artist spent many years traveling around the United States - living during different periods in Pennsylvania and Ohio - Cole ultimately settled in the Hudson River Valley in 1836. In fact, his rural studio in Catskill, New York is now called the Thomas Cole National Historic Site and is home to many local art programs and preservation efforts. Cole's work has been called a "higher style of landscape": unlike the Impressionists who preceded him, Cole didn't paint scenery just to capture its beauty. Instead, he implemented romantic themes like biblical and literary subjects to elevate the subject matter to a higher plane. Cole's most famous works include The Oxbow, which shows Mount Holyoke in Massachusetts; and View on the Catskill, depicting the Catskill Mountains near his home in New York.
