Chaim Soutine

Chaim Soutine was a Jewish Russian painter who lived and worked in Paris while contributing heavily to the expressionism movement. Even though he was inspired by classic European painting, he developed his own individual style placing shape, color, and texture higher in importance than the actual representation. This approach was pivotal in the connection to Abstract Expressionism.

Sir John Everett Millais

Sir John Everett Millais’ an English painter and a founder of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. At the age of eleven, Millais entered the Royal Academy School, becoming the youngest student to have ever entered. Millais’ work was considered to be the standard for the Brotherhood. By the mid-1850s, Millais began to shift in a different direction despite the poor critical reviews.

Frederick Carl Frieseke

Frederick Carl Frieseke was an American artist and an influential member of the Giverny art colony. During his time abroad, Frieseke studied under Whistler, but later discountinued his formal education and referred to himself as self-taught. He returned to the United States later, but spent winters in Paris and his style was very similar to that of the impressionist of France at the time.

John Leslie Breck

John Leslie Breck was an American Impression art who tragically died at the age of 39. During his short life, Breck introduced Impressionism to the United States. After he finished school, Breck left the US to study at the Royal Munich Academy in Germany, and later went to Paris to attend the Academie Julian. Breck became friends with Claude Monet and introduced the US to Impressionism.

Suzanne Valadon

Suzanne Valadon was a French painter and artist. Valadon debuted herself as a model and in the 10 years that she worked as a model, she posed for numerous artists such as Toulouse-Lautrec, Henner, and Renoir. As she was posing, Valadon educated herself in painting by observing the artists at work. Her most well-known piece, Joy of Life, which featured two female nudes and her lover.
