Born in 1881 in Spain, Pablo Picasso is often considered to be the father of the modern art Cubist movement. Picasso was an artist all of his life and continued to explore and experiment with different styles and techniques. His dedication to art eventually led him to become one of the most universally-known and well-paid artists of the 20th century. Taught by his father, an art teacher, he eventually attended the Barcelona School of Fine Arts. His tumultuous life that included several affairs with women and his political beliefs were a strong influence on his works of art.

As Picasso aged and grew as an artist, he went through several transitional periods that greatly affected his art. The Blue Period (1901-1904) involved paintings that were created using only blue and green colors. The subject matter usually consisted of somber subject matter like prostitutes, beggars and emaciated people. Other periods include the Rose Period, Cubism, Classicalism and Surrealism.
