Emile Claus

For art lovers interested in learning about some of the unsung heroes of Impressionism, Emile Claus is an exciting discovery. Born in 1849, this Belgian painter came from a working family of 13 children, and an artist's career wasn't in his parent's plans for him. Although permitted to take drawing classes, Claus was sent to France to become a baker's apprentice. Claus simply couldn't let go of his artistic passions, and eventually went to the Antwerp Academy of Fine Arts to train, paying his own way through school.

As an artist, Claus was incredibly successful. He became friends with some of the most noted artists of the day and travelled around the world for his painting exhibitions. While his early works had a realistic look and included many portraits, he eventually moved on to an Impressionist style. He was particularly noted as a pioneer of Luminism, which focused on the effects of light as seen in famous works of Claus like "Cows Crossing the Lys River." Many other paintings incorporated lush rural settings or bodies of water, both of which allowed for careful study of the effects of light.
