Belgian artist Emile Claus loved drawing from an early age and narrowly escaped a future as a baker by paying his way through the Antwerp Academy of Fine Arts. His draftsmanship evolved into a talent for painting, which he would then practice in his rural riverside cottage. Inspired by the lush setting, humble people, and gorgeous natural light, his artwork excelled to international fame. His luminist style was inspired by Claude Monet's attention to the unique lighting and atmosphere.
Emile Claus (1849-1924) was a Belgian painter, who is considered to be the pioneer of Belgian Luminism. In 1904, he founded the society Vie et Lumière ('life and light').
