The Pompidou Center Plans to Open Satelite Museum in New Jersey

The Pompidou Center is a multi-use building in Paris that holds an assortment of cultural entities. They include the Public Information Library, the Musée National d’Art Moderne, and a center for music. The Musée National d’Art Moderne is the largest collection of modern art in Europe. The Museum’s art collections are so expansive that they began to open different branches in other cities. These include places such as Brussels and Hong Kong.

The Pompidou Center plans to open its first North American satellite museum in Jersey City New Jersey in 2024. The center has been attempting to expand its global reach by opening branches in other countries since 2015. The new location will be in a renovated industrial building in Journal Square and will be called Pompidou x Jersey City. This is part of the cities recent push to build more of a community for the arts.

The Jersey City branch will have access to Pompidou’s massive art collection in forming its new exhibits. It will also benefit from the association and branding that comes with this very popular French museum. The city will be responsible for the renovation costs and the annual fee, in exchange for being able to curate from the museum’s pieces.

The Original Pompidou

The original Pompidou center is planning to close for its own renovations in 2023. This makes the various international branches vital to the attraction’s survival. It will allow its art pieces to still be displayed and continue to bring in revenue. The Musée National d’Art has works from artists including Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, August Macke, and many more. They include artists from movements such as Fauvism, Cubism, and Surrealism. It is the second-largest collection of modern and contemporary art in the world, behind only the Museum of Modern art in New York. Now a portion of that collection will be available right across the Hudson River.

As you wait for the new museum to open, you can still enjoy a variety of modern art in our Modern Art gallery. We have something to suit every taste and décor.
