When Vincent van Gogh painted "Cafe Terrace at Night" in 1888, it marked a new standard that would influence artists - including van Gogh - for years to come. This representation of patrons at a French café, completed while living in Arles, demonstrated the full development of his artistic style. In particular, the dynamic color combinations of the café and surrounding street are exclusive to van Gogh, as is the depth of perspective the leads the viewer into the night. Perhaps most notably, "Café at Night" is the first van Gogh painting to use stars in its background - a landmark which would be fully realized in the following year's "Starry Night".
