Hiroshige Paintings

Widely considered to be the last great artist to work in the Japanese printmaking tradition known as Ukiyo-e, Hiroshige was born in 1797. A native of the country's capital, Edo (now Tokyo), he is primarily remembered for his incredible landscapes. Producing over 8,000 works over the course of his life, many of them made their way to Europe, where they had a tremendous impact on the course of Western art as well. Vincent van Gogh was a known admirer and collector of Hiroshige's prints, even going so far as to paint his own versions of several images. Featuring balanced, almost poetic compositions that showed the harmony between man and nature, Hiroshige's prints have stood the test of time.

Despite being born and eventually dying in the nation's capital city of Edo, Hiroshige created thousands of incredible artworks that depict scenes from all around Japan. Series' like "The Fifty Three Stations of the Tokaido" and "Famous Views of the Sixty-odd Provinces" take viewers on a journey outside the city, across all terrains, and in every season. Japan's diversity is on full display in Hiroshige's work - from serene fishing villages to bustling cities, humble teahouses to sacred mountain temples.
